Agnes Kay: Running Edinburgh EMF 2018 Half Marathon

My story

Please help raise funds to raise awareness and support these three charities in aid of me running this years EMF Half Marathon on 27th May.

Fungal Infection Trust – for my dad who was diagnosed with Aspergillosis a couple of years ago – I’d like to continue to raise funds for FIT and support their research in these life threatening fungal infections and to help support patients like my father.

The UK Foundation for Kawasaki Disease something which is close to our family, as my nephew was recently diagnosed with KD during April 2018.

When it was first mentioned the response was that it was the same name as the motorbikes range!?!

I have decided to raise money for Society whose aims are to raise more awareness of the condition across the UK as well as push for better diagnosis, treatment and national protocols.

Around 8 in every 100,000 children develop Kawasaki disease in the UK each year, however is more common in countries of Japan and Asia.

What is Kawasaki Disease? – Kawasaki disease is a rare condition that mainly affects children under the age of five. The characteristic symptoms are a high temperature that lasts for more than five days with:

  • a rash
  • swollen glands in the neck
  • dry cracked lips
  • red fingers or toes
  • sore/red eyes

The symptoms of Kawasaki disease are similar to those of an infection, although the exact cause is not fully understood. Kawasaki disease causes the blood vessels to become inflamed and swollen, which can lead to complications in the coronary arteries (the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart).

Up to 5% of children with Kawasaki disease experience complications with their heart. In about 1% of cases, the complications can be fatal.

Thanks to the doctors diagnosis at the Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh, my nephew Robin recovered well following his 2 week stay. He will be closely monitored and have regular tests to ensure that he doesn’t have any lasting side effects.

So early diagnosis of KD and treatment is directly linked to improved outcomes.

My other two charities are:

Mental Health UK – everyone knows at least one person who has or is suffering with mental health and it’s heartbreaking to see. I would like to help where I can by raising funds for this charity who can provide the extra mental health support that many people need.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my page and reading my story – I’ll appreciate any donation, big or small, to give towards these great causes.
